I didn't take any honey off this year and thought I would leave it on for them to feed over winter. Is this a good idea? And do I need to move the super down to under the brood box? Many thanks for any advice

not if it's full and sealed - just remember to take the queen excluder off - especially where you are, or be prepared to lose the who;e colony to starvation

Leaving honey is an excellent idea (unless you are dependent on it for your income, because yes, sugar is much cheaper ;) ). It's why the bees stored it in the first place. But as JBM has said, no need to move it, they put it there for a reason.
