Japanese knotweed is a notifiable imported pest plant which is very difficult to eradicate as the roots go down some 30 feet and chopping it up merely produces more plants spread around. Bit like balsam which is also notifiable. Bees might love them though like most I would not tell on the ones my bees love to forage from!!!!

Japanese knotweed is not a notifiable weed. Never has been. Please check the Defra website.
 
Apparently Japanese Knotweed is edible.
No idea what it tastes like - sushi, I suppose...

The young spears are meant to taste like rhubarb and can be used in the same way. Yet to try it myself though;)
 
its not notifiable but there is this:-

Although it does not produce seeds, it can sprout from very small sections of rhizomes and, under the provisions made within the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to cause Japanese knotweed to grow in the wild. Much of its spread is probably via topsoil movement or construction traffic.
