I have used the recipe on the Th--nes thymol tub which the bees appear to be taking down but would like to try Hivemakers as it uses less spirits. So can anyone tell me where I can pick up a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol and not the large amount Maplyns wanted to sell me.

Just bought a bottle from cheminst for £1.50
Boots also sell it but only had big bottles -1 litre i think

Ebay is one place.
Please can you post the Thorns recipe as that will be interesting.

Hi Outlander,
I used sunflower oil much easier.

I have just looked at hivemakers thymol recipe and he says use IPA or surgical spirit. I looked at my bottle of surgical spirit and it is based on methylated spirit, not IPA.
Will this be safe to use ?

as he says - you can use IPA or surgical spirit. that is not the same as saying IPA/surgical spirit.

personally i use IPA because i have access to it at work.

Thorne's recipe:

Dissolve 50g in 0.25l of surgical spirit (£1 per bottle from Asda)
Add 2 teaspoons to 4.55l of syrup and stir well

Slightly oily sheen to the surface when mixed but the bees have accepted it readily.

Tom Thorne’s is dissolve 50g thymol into 250ml of methylated or surgical spirit. Then add 2 teaspoons to 1 gallon of syrup.

I tried this and found it to be quite potent so diluted back to one teaspoon per gallon.

I asked in boots but they stated that they did not sell any alcohol in store; I just left it at that after giving her a puzzled look.

As I have said somewhere before - there is no difference in the concentration, just double the dose of Hivemaker's original recipe (two teaspoonfuls per gallon as opposed to one in Hivemaker's sticky).

30g to 150ml is the same as 50g to 250ml. Both ten grams to 50ml solvent.

Hi Rab, I wanting to try Pete's emulsified thymol pre mix and the use of the solvent is a lot less I thoght.

I'll have to double check now.

I bought a 500ml bottle of surgical spirit at my local Boots but the pharmacist did say that when they had sold their present stock they would no longer sell alcohol. It was costly - I think I paid over £4 for the half litre bottle.

Lloyds chemists usually have it. They had to rummage around in a drawer when I asked for some so I guess people don't ask so much for it nowadays. I think using it to rub on pressure sores has been superseded by more modern and probably less painful methods.
