Good point it had occured to me to offer to mow her lawn in that particular area I have asked her to let me know when she intends to mow funny thing though she had been mowing in the area many times before without incident and so have I on my side

lawn mowing seems to really aggravate even the mildest bees

I must be lucky . I can run my lawnmower, beside, in front of and underneath my TBHs with zero interest.. even when the bees are flying strongly. Or when they are queenless as happened earlier this year..

I can even strim under the hives with my strimmer.

Perhaps it's just that they are Carnies...

In my limited experience, lawn mowing seems to really aggravate even the mildest bees.

A newbee question.......

Would it not be possible to close the entrance to the hive for ten minutes so you can mow the lawn or would this pee the bees of even more?

Unless you were mowing your lawn in the dark you would end up with all the foraging bees stuck outside the hive wondering why the entrance was closed.

So it can be done then?, i would of thought that mowing the lawn with the hive closed for ten minutes and the majority of the bees inside the hive is better then dealing with a few peeved that cant get in.

How much is insurance for one hive and where is the best rip off......whoops i mean insurance broker to go to? :)

Thanks

Nice day for mowing = nice day for foraging , it's surprising how quickly a garden fills up with bees , if they have nowhere to go ,what then?
My mongrels tolerate my mowing /strimming (petrol engines in each case)
I wait until most of the flying has ceased for the day .
If I leave it too late I find that the bees mill out onto the alighting board but then scuttle back in as I approach their particular hive :svengo:

Yes, it could be done. But, as John says, on a decent mowing day you would have more than a few bees trying to get back in the hive - more like a few hundred.
You could do it later in the evening when most foraging had stopped for the day.

Edit: Sorry John, didn't read your post properly. Apologies for the echo, echo, echo!

Or close them in the night before and do it first thing, just be careful when you open up again...
I have used a 2 stroke strimmer out side hives at a site without a problem but I know they get upset when the neighbour uses this 4 stoke mower, different pitch/smell?

Mike.

Seems to be what they're used to - 4-stroke petrol mower and leccy strimmer and they just don't care. Got on my knees with a pair of hand-shears and they created merry hell. bee-smillie

However, there is an onus on the owner of bees to place his/her hives somewhere where people will not get stung,

and where would that be?
