Who? Darwin? He was dead wrong about inheritance and he readily admitted he didn't have an explanation. Foremost theory back then was blending theory of inherit which was incorrect. One of the few gaps in his theory.

Given the knowledge base in his day, the man did good.
 
Oh no question. Shame it took so long for his ideas to be be married with genetics.
Fortunately they did, although Wallace's independent work is largely neglected and was published about the same time. Bit like Rosalind Franklins contribution to DNA structure, they got the Nobel prizes, she didn't.
