seeing as she has never been , i am taking the better half off to london next weekend all day sat and most of sunday and i want a few cheap ideas

i was thinking off the train for 10 am then straight to St. Pauls might even pay to do the whispering gallery,

then trafalger square?

was thinking west minster next?

i cant remeber how far is the walk from west misnster down to tower hill?
maybe the boat instead. any ideas anyone?? and or costs

dont know if thats enough for the day

i was hoping to get tickets for a show for the night time, any suggestions anyone? and what do they charge

sunday i was thinking of doing

horse gaurds/ buck palace (outside only)
hyde park

harrods maybe and then some where else

so all you travelers, where and what would you suggest, think more logistics rather than expensive enterence fees.

we want to do the touristy thing, but with out the ques and expences, so no silly entrance fees please or three hour ques and we are going next weekend, father day weekend. so it has to be organise quite quickly, remeber no car and i dont think the tour buses are good value, but then again i dont know what they charge for a full ticket.

I was up there last weekend, the best advise i can give you is: dont bother!
London is a **** hole, end of story...

It all depends where you are staying and how up for it you are and are you prepared to do a bit of walking

The Underground is the way to go bus works for sight seeing but can be hard work forget the taxies as you say apart from emergencies. I don’t understand the quarter mile bit but as long as you are close to the tube its ok, you can get good premier inn type hotels close to central London main line stations, I don’t know but perhaps you will come on the west coast line so Euston.

St Pauls is magnificent but then again are most cathedrals, they do from memory charge for everything for me its not the best given your time. I know a good few things to see, a walk over Tower Bridge at night, a walk round Soho and Leicestershire Square, Street Theatre at Covent Garden, I can put together what I consider a nice walk and include a number of sights to see so you can decide, some may include bees, perhaps see if you can spot any of the 40+ hives in Regents Park?

natural history museum......little venice.....tate modern(no charges) walk along south bank.... london eye is well worth the Que and the £££.

A river launch (a bus on the River Thames) from Westminster Bridge to Kew, and then a visit to Kew Gardens.

Natural history museum= free
National gallery= free
the tube is great fun if you've never done it.
London eye really is a must, the best thing London has done
maybe get a hotel out of London, not too far and train in. I can recommend Tring (my sister lives there) its quiet at night but still close to get to the big smoke.
the river boat sounds a great idea.
Hairspray would be a real wife pleaser in the theatre stakes, failing that Les Miserables seems to be popular but why any one would want to see a miserable musical I don't know!
Have fun and can I come with you?

Horseguards is not worth it on a Sunday.

Check the House of Commons/House of Lords websites. You used to be able to do free tours (not sure about weekends). Don't forget the Cabinet War Rooms (Churchill's) at the bottom of Clive Steps (King Charles Street off Whitehall).

Although I worked in central London on and off for forty years, one of the most interesting things I did with the family once was to get on one of the zillions of tourist buses and do the round trip - fascinating glimpses of all sorts of bits of London I had never seen before.

If you have time, do the boat trip from Westminster Pier (I think) to Greenwich Maritime Museum and back.

If you get a chance to go to the Globe Theatre it's well worth a visit. At £5, stand in the yard is the best value theatre there is.

Mike.

go to peckham and see what its like to be a minority

where i live in smethwick as a white family we have become a tourist atraction on our own. 98 allotments i use one and untill last year i was the only whity on it, shiks only tho, they wont allow smelly others on the site, its not done you know. lol

there nearest i get to a family gathering is walking down the centre of the road!!! ( think about it!!)

I have done westminster and the law courts, they were brilliant, cant rember which one was which tho??

like the water tour, does anyone know how much or when or internet details?
i love the natural history, and being a builder you just have to admire the terracota brick front arch ways,

No it's not, unless you hang around all the shitty tourist bits, M.

The City is a great place to walk around on the weekend. There are loads of wonderful churches and you'll can do walking tours which are not excessive.

If you're going to be at St Pauls, walk over Millennium Bridge, visit Tate Modern, have lunch there or round the corner. Alternatively, walk east, past the Globe theatre (the bar is nice and the food is very good) or walk On to New Globe Walk and grab a bite in Tas Pide. It's a very good value Turkish specialising in pide (a kind of pizza) but it does all the usual mezze. Loads of other alternatives if you fancy something else, including the Mango Tree on Redcross Way, the Wheatsheaf on Southwark Street and plenty more besides.
If you go to Borough High Street, you can visit The George, which is the last surviving galleried coaching inn in the capital, possibly the Uk. While there, you can see Southwark Cathedral, look up at the Shard, walk over London Bridge and when you get to Monument, go up THE monument to the Great Fire as you get a great view.
If you've had enough then, you can get the tube west again to the fleshpots and greasy streets.
Point is, there are loads of great places to go that are not as crap as most people might experience in London.
Oh, and if you're going for a beer, look up Sam Smith's pubs, as they are far cheaper, generally lovely buildings and the food is pretty good.

Nothing beats shanks unless you are going more than a half mile. Bring a small A to Z.
