They must think we are bigger fools than they are.

Know what you mean about being asked about your bees Chris58, but then many bee keepers and all the disaster stories in the media don't help.

I run a pub and I am amazed that the first question the locals ask is 'how many bees do you have?.

I could answer that question for sure the day I got my first Nuc. The company said I would have five frames of "about" 5,000 bees........After a fortnight I stopped answering the question!

I was surprised to find the other day that bees were nesting in my cavity wall. They are definately honey bees as I'd seen a swarm in May, and I'd heard on TV how Einstin said they were being killed off by mobile phones - so I decided to become a newbeek.

Buying myself a small nuke to hold them in I was bitten several times as I tried catching them in a net - they certainly didnt beehive themselves!

After they were in I was pretty sure that my hive was queenless. Then I saw Her Majesty.

Now my bees are lovely, but do you ever get stung? I asked two local beeks the question and they gave me three answers, one suggested I paint HM the same colour every year (prehaps a nice brown), one suggested that I leave some literature about for the girls to peruse, but however hard I try the bees don't read the books and the last suggested that top bee space is better than bottom bee space or was it the other way around - I just let it bee.

Finally someone asked my if I make honey. Well I had a go but I only got 200 pound off, and to make it worse I dont like honey. I wasnt sure if I could eat the wax either, so I went down to Tesco and bought a jar for 99p.

Language evolves on a daily basis!
Remember 'English has developed from an obscure northern dialect " and will continue to do so. Remember also,that the 'Wigan' ( woolly back) dialect precedes STANDARD English by a couple of centuries .
Remind me one day to explain the difference between the spelling of there and their and why in spite of their being pronounced correctly in Wigan are being incorrectly pronounced by the rest of the English speaking world

Mine seem to be fairly happy with few losses so not sure when I started keeping them in an ‘unfriendly way’?

It's a tricky subject, but I think there are a couple examples of what one might call friendly / unfriendly:

Friendly - uniting two colonies using a sheet of newspaper
Unfriendly - uniting two colonies by spraying air freshener onto them.

Friendly - keeping transportation to a minimum
Unfirendly - travelling long distances for heather / fruit pollination

I'm sure there are many other examples.

And before the bullets start flying, I'm not necessarily criticising any of these practices, just giving an example of what people might mean when they say "the friendly way"

This always reminds me of the scene in Ghostbusters where they have just caught the green ghost (having destroyed much of the hotel). The client refuses to pay and Bill Murray says "That's fine, we can just put him right back in there..."

How do you feel or think about this then.....

The bees are kept with the absolute minimum of intervention and allowed to behave in a natural manner without manipulation or interference. No artificial or chemical treatments are used on either the bees or the hives.
