I have just taken my latest harvest from the bees . After extraction it seems to have a slight ' catty smell ' to it . Would it be privet ? What would be the best way to deal with it as i do not wish to spend to much time jaring up if its not going to improve . I do have some rape that i could blend it with . Cheers .

Might be or it could be Ragwort that they have been foraging on. There are a number of honey's that have a slightly 'off' taste when they are fresh but actually mellow in storage. I would leave it in the tubs for a few months and then taste again and see what it's like - if it doesn't improve then you have not ruined your rape honey (which makes a really nice soft set honey) by blending it with other, less palatable, honey. You can always blend it later ...

Most probably privet. They say it tastes like cats pee but how do these people know? Ideal honey for the mother-in-law. Should stop her asking for free jars of honey in the future. Years ago has bees near a council estate with lots of uncared for privet hedges and often got a super or two of it. Takes a time to mellow and then could only be eaten as granulated. Privet not grown so much these days. Ragwort honey very yellow in colour with strong taste. The comb used to house it will also be quite yellow. If mixed in with other honey gives it a bit of a bite! I tend to feed unpleasant tasting honey back to the bees. However with any honey with an acquired taste you may find someone that really likes it and can then charge them a premium for a specialist honey that they can't buy in the shops!

Solidago... Golden Rod also makes honey smell like a Victorian Gents Urinal.... as for tasting like cats pee... I will leave others to be the judge of that!

I get that you had to smell it - but surely tasting cat's pee goes beyond the job description!
