Hi

just asking if anyone has experience of Beehives on flat roofs three floors up?

I have been offered a site at a University on the roof of their new biulding. It is about the size of a Tennis ~court with a sedum roof with a paving slab path around part

It has walls 3m high shading the North East and south east and on the South West and North West are open aspect and only have a 2ft dwarf walls

it has access from Ground floor to the roof by lift

i think i might tie the hives down to a paving slab and that means they will face South West

one problem may be security lighting that appears on 24/7 and they want to "engage", students

so any veiws

Views rather than real personal experience.

There are hives on top of Fortnum & Mason in Picadilly and in Paris there are some hives on the Palais Royale (more than three floors up). Both are reported as working well.

Canterbury Association has started to develop an apiary above a city-centre retail block, about 3 floors up. There's a high wall around, high enough for shelter from direct wind. Turbulence not too bad, I'm told. Main awkwardness so far appears the need for care with the roofing material 'underfoot'.

Would it involve you getting a security pass and/or keys? Other than possible hassles in this respect I'd go for it.

Go for it! I have a single colony up on a roof, it gets really hot under the bee suit, the neighbours can watch me at work from a distance, and it can be quite windy. Removing heavy supers from up there is never fun, but still, not bad at all if it is just one or two colonies.
