hive scales (strain gauges)
foundation (now in plastic!)
hive-top feeders and even hives (polysterene!)
hive pallets (also plastic)
refractometers (now under $100 US)
artificial insemination gear
graftless queen-rearing kits
and I could go on.

I guess I could just compare my oldest catalogs with my newest.
 
*** hive-top feeders - commercial, plastic , yes a big advantage compared to self made.


*** artificial inseminated queens - marvellous jump forwards included that at same time varroa killed nonselected german blacks from scereny.

Calm, high productive beehives were true. - however I think that most hobbiest add colonies from swarmed hives.

Great replys above, but still not what I would class as a major advance in beekeeing (like Langstroth.

Both James and Finman touched on what would be my major change, but it is a bit more than 25 years...Plastic.
