Yes...they trampled on a swarm of bees that were not too amused about it and went ballistic.

I can see how they might not be amused.
Not sure this would account for all of the often quoted bees and horses don't mix.
I can understand how it might relate to a rider high up on a horse crossing bees flight path. Friend of mine got complaints from horse riders about being stung as they rode past his house, Leylandii soon cured that.
 
Well these certainly never mixed too well, that's for sure, and a bit local to here.

And there are quite a lot it seems in the USA.

The clue is possibly in the "some hives were damaged", suggesting horses had access to hives.
Seems like many horses react very badly when attacked by bees.
 
They obviously wash too often and use the wrong soap.

Nahh, the ones round us are quite smelly. I reckon they show too much fear and shave too often. They think they are a bit superior and can trample all over the bees and their hives and then get surprised by what happens.
