Forgive a silly question, I'm new here and need lots of help !
I have a nest under my garage and don't know if they're wasps or bees. I cant' tell because they fly at such speed I can't get a proper look at them.
All I can say is they never stop flying in and out of the nest from first light until dark
They're not aggressive, I have to get into the garage on a regular basis and have to walk through their 'line of flight' I've been hit a few times but that's all and I think that's because they didn't see me, never been stung.
Any comments, advice please ?

Try to take a picture and fire it over.;)

Have you seen the nest, can you describe it?

wasps or bees ?

Thank you for your replies
I will get a net - didn't think of that - thanks.
I can't get a pic, they're just a blurr !
The entrance to the nest seems to be through a hole at the base of the garage.

A silhouette of one might help ID.
Are there any dead on the floor underneath?

Just look at the entrance for those leaving. When you notice the yellow faces, you will know you have wasps.
I still have an active colony in my garden.

no, no dead ones, and they're just too fast to see any colours at all !
I'm going to get a net tomorrow and try to catch one.

Be prepared to get stung from that silly advice...like mentioned look at (watch) the entrance in the wall... it can be hard to tell the difference when they are active.. all you need is one to make a mistake on entry.

obstruct the hole for a few minutes (ensure you can unblock it from a distance away) the next few arrivals will just mill around the entrance trying to get in so you can then take a photo.

That SILLY ADVICE about using a child's fishing net was given to me by one of Defra's own inspectors... in lieu of a "pooka" net that entomologist would have to hand.

The most sensible advive would have been to get in touch with your local beekeeping association, who I am sure would have sent someone round to check... with full protective double skinned beekeeping suit and thick leather gloves... only question is , should the trousers be inside or outside of the boots?
( I would go for outside with cycle clips in such a case as this!

excellent idea, all you would need is a paddle of some description on a long stick, you wouldn't even need to completely block the entrance, just cover it to hinder their flight path.

Phone the local beekeepers association for help. Someone in a beesuit will come out to help you.

Wasps returning to a nest don't fly straight in. They hang about outside until they get permission to enter by the sentries at the sentry point. The caveat here being that the 'hole' is a sentry point.

I don't need too as i am not interested in joining an association...;)

Why not?

If you joined as a "County member" you could go to any BBKA meeting and receive a glossy mag all about how to keep bees !... and not have to pay for insurance you do not need!!!
