Due to lots happening here I finally went to see if they had any trees left. I came away with 12 fruit trees.

My garden has apple and some victoria plum, and my hives are sited near to the plum trees and am sure it did not help the problem with wasps which are attracted to the fruit trees then they find a nice honey source nearbye...
had to make loads of wasp traps last year to keep them down..

I am also a bit concerned that the fruit trees especially the plum attract moths if you go out at dusk with torch and give the plum tree branches a shake there will be a lot of moths.

I dont know if some of them are wax moth but i did have wax moth larvae in the hives..

none of this is really a problem i dont think but i am sure the wasp, moth issue would be less if the fruit trees were further away...

just a thought if you are going to plant fruit trees near your hives :)

In 2011-12 I was minding two colonies for an entomologist following a bereavement and at the end of both seasons he would dump all the unused fruit about 3 mtrs away form the hives. Although it attracted wasps it was never a problem unlike the wind turbine 15mtrs away that appeared to make the air vibrate some days.

If you missed Aldi's fruit trees Lidl's should have them some the 20th!

Tesco also have some at the moment for £8.

(imported fruit trees good, imported queens bad???:))

Looking at Lidl's flyer the fruit trees are MUCH larger in Aldi.
Lidl's are only going to be 70cm, Aldi were 1.5-2 mt.
If you can go for the Aldi ones for the same price.

The plan is Plums from July to September - I love them - and plum jams as well !

You will need a late plum to crop into September like Marjorie's Seedling.
Czar crops earlier than Victoria and the three give me a good long season of yummy plummies.

WELL ... I got lucky today, dropped in to my local Tesco for a bottle of milk and found they had fruit trees on sale in the foyer ..£8 so a bit more expensive than Aldi but not bad looking trees .... AND in amongst them was just one ... Marjories Seedling Plum ! So I blew my week's pocket money on yet another plum tree ...yummie plums right through the season in my old age ... perhaps I could do with a Victoria just to make sure ???

I had an allotment for approx 5 years and gave it back last year as I now have the free run of a friend’s garden. On this allotment I planted a couple of fruit trees an apple and a pear both were now 5 years old and good size producing fruit. I dug up the apple and moved it to a friends plot as they wanted it but left the pear. Last year the new plot holder cut the pear down and dug up the roots and the other day told me of this fantastic deal at aldi for fruit trees and bought himself a pear tree??? It may take me some time to work this one out.

Those with big bills for removal of dead Ash trees may have reason to debate on that statement!

I planted twenty fruit trees on our plot when Aldi had them on offer. They seem to have done okay to date given the battering winds that have blown over the area. I used a sprinkling of Mycorrhizal fungi when planting which has done wonders for establishing trees on hedgerows for me in the past. If you're spending money on fruit trees I'd recommend it based upon my experience where I have shallow sandy soils.

Samefully, i must admit that most of my fruit trees are imported - I get them from a nurseries in Hampshire although I did manage to get my new damson from Monmouth and have been told there's a nurseryman where we hunt who does a lot of the old Welsh apple varieties

Bargain of the month !!!

Aldi have reduced their potted fruit trees .. They were £9.99 and have a 50% off label on them ... looking a bit in need of water ... but I got to the checkout with a Conference Pear and a nice Red Apple (Can't remember the variety) and I got charged £3.48 for the pair !!! £1.74 EACH :icon_204-2::icon_204-2:

My receipt says they were £3.49 each with a further reduction of £1.75. Both nice 6 footers with plenty of branches ... off to get some water on them now ... I just love a bargain ...
