It looks like a dragon fruit but I thought they were yellow. What is inside?
Or a cherimoya......

It reminds me of a small pomigranite with 9mm orange bean type seeds inside.

I forgot to mention it smelt horrible when i broke it open..

Definitely Pitaya .. Dragon Fruit .. I can't believe you've got one to fruit that far North ... are you taking a break somewhere warm .. like Thailand ?

Although I'm not sure about that orange seed.. the seeds are usually black and not that big ... ?

I've only ever seen it grown in a hot house in the UK. Won't overwinter in your climate .. unless you've been manipulating its genes ?

Those are not the seeds of a dragon fruit. Looks more like a pomegranate seed!

Dragon fruit grow on a cactus
That tree is not a cactus and the seeds are wrong

Yes you are right .. I didn't look at the photo of it growing on the tree ...

Wierd ..

Possibly one of the Magnolia family ? Leaves look right ... never seen one produce seed pods quite like that but they do create seed pods which are fleshy and the seeds are about the right shape and size ?

There are lots of varieties of Magnolia ...

I support the opinion that it might be a magnolia seed pod.

Me to the leaves look the same, and the stamen that's supporting the seed pod looks like a magnolia .
My app for identifying plants isn't coming up with much .
Keep us posted if you find out what it is.

How about this one.
This is a magnolia
very similar
