How long is a piece of string
How bad are the second Thor sale frames? I'm looking at buying 500, would this be wise?

Cant comment on the thornes seconds but I got 250 Maisies seconds and they were fine.

Dont know why anyone would but first quality frames considering the price difference.

They're fine ... I've had a few with bad knots, some with shonky side grooves and a handful of warps. 2-3% duds I reckon.

only problem is a few knots and if the knots are in the lugs they are unusable, i would say 93% acceptable 5% just passable and 2% bl7^dy awfull

so buy 550 and you will have 500 acceptable

Still a damn sight cheaper than first quality, which I would never buy, just can't afford them, irrespective of me being a student or not, I hate paying more for something when it's cheaper elsewhere (am not tight or a skinflint, just frugal).

Thank you everyone, looks like I'll be ordering quick. Don't have time to make them but will next winter hopefully.
Cheers all

I have found maisemores frames go together quicker than thornes.
Super frames, maisemores again, thornes seem to have a lot of dark timber sidebars that split when nailed or pushed onto top bar.
Haven't got time to faf about with a stanly knife. Trimming foundation down really annoys me.
thornes seconds boxes are far better than maisemores.

Just put together 100 Thornes seconds frames, one side bar rejected. Have always used them, very good value. Just ordered some more.

Order for a hundred+ due any day now and very rarely use anything else. Unless I am in for a nasty shock with this order, I have to scrap few and cheap enough to burn when past there usable state.

Bought 2000 last summer to use in nucs that were needing space and we had no frames left. Got 1998 out of that. Did buy a spare bundle of bottom bars however.....those skinny things are the most likely to be no good.

Those bottom bars are real quick to make though. Just waiting for confirmation about some new bees and I'll order.

bottom bars are the only frame bits I make to compliment 2nd quality frames, out of 50 frames I'll probably make 4 bottom bars

Depends what you want them for. If they're for your own use, then why not take a punt ?

But if you're making-up nucs for sale - don't customers deserve 1st quality ? The savings on a 5-frame nuc would only be around £2 ... so is buying seconds - for that particular purpose - worth it ?

I've bought seconds from most of the big names in the past and found them lacking. Poor fit, lots of knots and quite a few breakages.

They aren't called seconds for nothing !

Actually you can buy first quality cheaper.
