A friend keeps a hive in my apiary. The entrance block of his shows evidence of something trying to get in or to widen the entrance. As you can see, there are quite substantial chips of wood which makes me think it's a bird or an animal. But none of my hives have been affected.

Any ideas at to what/who the culprit might be?

You just have to hope it’s not something trying to get OUT! 🐭

As above I'd say
Squirrels attack my tree bait hives and I've had to deploy Fenn Mk4's in the bee shed because of Roland Rat his crew.
Those perforated mouseguards aren't much use but you could use a pair (or something similar) top and bottom set apart to repair and armour plate the existing entrance.
