Why should 'whatever-you-call-God' be a Being ? (and invariably an anthropomorphised Being) Why not simply a Force ?

What I find unacceptable is for some to claim intimate knowledge of 'whatever it is', and coerce the gullible into worshipping 'it', usually whilst they are dressed-up in fancy costumes and performing rituals.

Why not simply accept this 'whatever it is', marvel at the consequences of 'whatever it is', and show due respect for those manifestations - on the basis that mankind cannot make even a fly from first principles, and certainly cannot make a planet.

All we seem to do is fool around with the environment as if it was one giant scientific experiment, put there purely for the amusement of human beings.

what a load of rubbish, another religious sect, I wish people would read the bible and not listen to sales men, you don't have to go to church or belong to a sect to worship god

lol. FSM is not 'another sect', it's a construct, from a letter to an education board in the US who were going to have evolution and creationalism taught in science lesons,

the letter follows, please read it.

Open Letter To Kansas School Board

I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design.

Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.

It is for this reason that I’m writing you today, to formally request that this alternative theory be taught in your schools, along with the other two theories. In fact, I will go so far as to say, if you do not agree to do this, we will be forced to proceed with legal action. I’m sure you see where we are coming from. If the Intelligent Design theory is not based on faith, but instead another scientific theory, as is claimed, then you must also allow our theory to be taught, as it is also based on science, not on faith.

Some find that hard to believe, so it may be helpful to tell you a little more about our beliefs. We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it. We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power. Also, you may be surprised to hear that there are over 10 million of us, and growing. We tend to be very secretive, as many people claim our beliefs are not substantiated by observable evidence.

What these people don’t understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. We have numerous texts that describe in detail how this can be possible and the reasons why He does this. He is of course invisible and can pass through normal matter with ease.

I’m sure you now realize how important it is that your students are taught this alternate theory. It is absolutely imperative that they realize that observable evidence is at the discretion of a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, it is disrespectful to teach our beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia. I cannot stress the importance of this enough, and unfortunately cannot describe in detail why this must be done as I fear this letter is already becoming too long. The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t.

You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

In conclusion, thank you for taking the time to hear our views and beliefs. I hope I was able to convey the importance of teaching this theory to your students. We will of course be able to train the teachers in this alternate theory. I am eagerly awaiting your response, and hope dearly that no legal action will need to be taken. I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism (Pastafarianism), and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence.

Sincerely Yours,

Bobby Henderson, concerned citizen.

Good find lol, I have faith in science, without it my wife would not be here today, but I also have faith in the bible not religion, I asked my father once why don't people go to church any more and his reply was we have not had a big war for some time and people need faith in time of need

Isn't the Peppered Moth still used as an example of fast evolution in action?

Yup, it has survived and is strong despite the controversy regarding the way some of the experimentation was done originally. http://pandasthumb.org/archives/2012/02/selective-bird.html

Thanks.

As an aside, I hadn't realised Prof Majerus had died. A tremendous loss.

A lot of people will have known of him, even though they won't have known his name, because he was responsible for publicising and logging the impact of the invasive Harlequin Ladybirds.

Here's his obit http://news.admin.cam.ac.uk/news/2009/02/06/tributetomikemajerus/

Leads to the rather lovely phrase 'the Flying Spaghetti Monster is often used as a contemporary version of Russell's teapot'

Which leads to the following quote from Bertrand Russell- Many orthodox people speak as though it were the business of sceptics to disprove received dogmas rather than of dogmatists to prove them. This is, of course, a mistake. If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity

Not a sect, no-one actually believes it, it's a demonstration of how religions work. Here's another http://www.thepinkhippo.org/

thanks for the bertrand quote, what a great philosopher he was.

I am a creationist firstly (it had to start somewhere) and an Evolutionist secondly . I will hold these beliefs until they are proved incorrect .
VM

Do you mean that, or are you making a philosophical point?

If you do, I'm afraid creationism has been proved wrong many, many times (not least on this thread). You can take a horse to water...

Man created the God particle, played God too many times and Big Bang. Not happened yet. But like a child looks for the answer. Maybe we evolve into God. Now there's a thought!

Rubbish are existence is not proof of God. creations dont mean creator
also God partial (higgs boson) was discovered not created. we had to create the conditions to see it but it was already there.
actually Gd example of how science made a prediction and then proved/descoved it.
like many transitional forms predicted then descoved in Human and many other spececes evolution.

There are ideas around that we are just part of a computer program being played out. Designed by the great programmer. Better not press control, alt, delete. Game over.

OK, lets turn this round. So far, those of us who don't believe in creation have provided pointers to swathes of proof in favour of evolution.

As with Russell's teapot (see my post no. 246) I believe the onus lies on creationists to provide some proof for their view. I don't believe that saying 'it says so in the bible' counts as proof. There are many writings supporting evolution, however these are routinely challenged and called upon to prove their theories- it's called peer review.

Got anything else?

You mean man has a big ego:icon_204-2:

I was advised (as a young airman) , never to discuss religion or sport in the barrack room .
This being the 260th post leads me to believe that it was sound advise indeed !!
