"an experienced member of the association collected a swarm and , lacking the woodwork at home, dumped it into an empty Apiary hive, much to the manager's annoyance.......they didnt like the new home and absconded the next day......"

I assume that the "experienced member" who simply dumped the swarm, was not the person who had marked the queen, red spot in a green year.

So the inference is, that the swarm had belonged to somebody else, previously.

To play the devils advocate, I presume we can rest, safe in the knowledge that the apiary people, with their new swarm safely re-hived, are diligently searching for the correct owners?

If the swarm had, [possibly], travelled 400 yards to where it was found, then it could have quite easily travelled 400 yards from anywhere on a similar radius from there.

That's, er....just over half a million square yards, could be quite a few hives in that area.
