Is there anywhere where one can look up the density of (registered, of course) hives in a particular area?
Not necessarily the position of the apiaries, but to get an idea of whether it's worth setting up a bait hive*, if there are a lot of colonies or you have a lot of space to yourself, whether local farmers are likely to be covered or they would welcome pollinators, and so on...

I've had a look on the maps on beebase, but I'm not sure what they are showing and if I'm reading them correctly, since there is no legend. Also you can't zoom in very far at all.

* I suppose one could say it's always worth it, because you never know: there could be unregistered hives, feral colonies, or else, but the chance of catching a swarm is a lot higher if there are apiaries in the area.

When you register at the BBKA website it will show the number of hives around your apiary in a radius of (I think) 10kms.

Mine was a slightly worrying 154.

I think you will find that is the Beebase website not the BBKA site. You will also find that if it says 154 it will be more than that as many beekeepers wont join beebase as they think its to much gov interference. Mind you on the other side how may of them are now unused as beekeepers have given up or moved so take with a pinch of salt.

Area inside 10 km radius is huge.

20 km from edge to edge. Half of hour to drive it.

Yes your right it's Beebase.

Quite right Finman. The 10km square is used by vetinary agencies throughout Europe for co-ordinating honeybee disease management.
If you ever import queens from abroad, the health certificate stipulates that there are no notifiable diseases within 10km of where the queen came from - don't you get these on the queens you buy in?

My Beebase states 141 other apiaries within 10km radius. I am firmly of the belief that there are a lot more than that!

I had a car that slow once .

.

I have neved had that slow car . Every car drive as fast as road are allowed to drive. Propably you have never moved hives to out pastures.

I have been in England several times, and they do not drive along village roads 100 km/hour.... And even motorways goes like earth worms in the morning.

When I drive my rural roads and move bees to forest, speed is 40-60 km/hour.

But surely you find good pastures beside motor ways, but you cannot stop there.

(tired to British intelligenzia)

Ok, now I'm registered Beebase quotes me as having 219 hives in the area where I'll be putting my hives.

Maybe it is worth putting out a few baits after all...

Sorry Finny, no offence intended. Just an old joke :)

It's always worth putting out bait hives! :D

Beebase data shows only the number of registered apiaries, not the number of colonies in each apiary, and there's no way of knowing how many unregistered beekeepers there are.

... or how many registered colonies are no longer there...

If you use google earth and work out a 10 mile radius with the ruler and mark your screen with a bit of tape to work out the radius, you will find it is quite a big area.

Agreed. I have been checking on such a tool the "working radius" of forager bees (I set it at 2 miles), so I know that a 10km radius is a lot of land. I'm not worried about the lack of forage, I was just wondering whether there were enough hives in the neighborhood to make it worthwhile setting up a bait hive or not. If it turned out that there were, say, only 20 hives in that radius, I might have considered it... well, not pointless, but maybe not worth setting up a bait hive with hopes, maybe just set one up with more of a "well... you never know, and I have to store this nuc somewhere..." kind of attitude.
