I keep my bees in poly too. Some Abelo but mostly Swienty
I do know what an Abelo crownboard looks like.
When travelling any distance I use travel screens. Do you think those little vents are enough for moving bees in poly?

I think it depends on the weather, and the size of the colony. But mostly, particularly here in Scotland - yes, I think they're enough, particularly if one takes care that the open mesh floor doesn't get blocked up at the sides.

PS: And you can increase the ventilation in an Abelo by inserting the side vents!

thanks all, really helpful

so, the vents in sides of boxes etc are more for moving and i shall just keep the solid blocks in all of them for now

Is it just the brood box or do you have the same in the supers? I would suggest water ingress around the excluder area. A dent or some damage in that plastic coating on top of box?

I have two of the new design Abelo hives in my apiary and have had the same problem with water in the runners.

I contacted Abelo about it and they responded by saying that the issue will go away once the bees propolise the hive properly, preventing the water from ingressing. :hairpull:

interesting

all of mine are new Abelos so this explains it

do you get the same MC?

i do get some in supers yes but more in brood box runners it seems

Yes - more on some than others. I think colonies differ.

I suppose propolising the joints might help in case of water seeping in from outside - but, again, it depends on whether your colony are keen propolisers. My hives are all fairly old, and I still often find gullies filled with water.
