Comb on comb?

Thought this was strange!

Is it normal for the bees to make additional comb on top of the new foundation they've drawn in the supers?

Normal with mine. I think it's when I overspace.

Yes if the spacing is too great this is very common. Cut it off when you extract and each time it will become less likely to happen again. On another note it is wild comb and fantastic for cutting and adding to jars of honey.

Thanks for the replies guys, good to know it's normal.

I use the castellated spacers in the supers, would it be better to use the self spacing frames instead?

That's a good idea Jthebeek, I'll make sure I pop some comb in the jars next time.

They often do it when drawing foundation, not so much with already drawn comb unless you space the frames for them to draw it out further, I.e.wide spacing.

I use ten castellations per box, and rarely do I get this. Some say to start with 11 frames to a box, then when drawn can cut down to 9. 10 seems a happy medium and works well for me.

I agree. I tried a different supplier last year, tempted by a bigger discount, (pay cheaper, pay twice!) and the proportion of foundations that were chewed, drawn "beside", bridged across to the next frame etc., was nuts. At least a couple of dozen went straight back through the solar extractor.
