It's often mentioned from people who have bees near OSR that it can make he bees grumpy from time to time. Probably down to when the weather changes and the flying bees are perhaps unable to forage. However if your hive is so full of bees and the OSR is in flower you may need a 2nd super.

Thanks I did add a super on all three hives so it will be interesting to see the build up next inspection. As OSR crystallises really quick I am told that you need to keep a close eye on it as it is hard to get out of the comb and when solid is useless for the bees.

You do need to keep an eye on it, most extract as soon as the rape fields turn green at the end of flowering whether capped or not but measure the water content, if you extract too much high water content honey you will get fermentation.
Once you have cleared the bees from the supers extract quickly, OSR will crystallize rapidly if left standing around in cool temperatures.

My neighbour has been moaning for years about being stung by my bees and not being able to use his garden. I have tried re queening but it seems to make little difference, he still gets stung and moans. I have 9 hives lined up against his 8ft hedge a few feet from his garden path so it seems to me he is bound to get stung occasionally and will have to live with it. He has asked me to move my bees to another part of the garden or an out apiary but I told him moving hives would make no difference and I don't like out apiaries.

His wife is allergic to bee stings and carries an epipen. I feel sorry for them but as I see it I have a right to keep bees and am doing nothing illegal. I have a good set up and am reluctant to change anything.

Beekill.. you aren't for real. Think a wind up. Nobody would keep 9 hives in a garden where they are damaging a neighbours health.
If a real post, then p...k of the year award to you.

Oh dear!
Your neighbours are also entitled to enjoy their garden pursuits!
I think you will find that you have fallen foul of nuisance laws and if pursued by your neighbours could result in you having to move your bees out of your garden plus liable to pay damages .
The myth that out of a hive bees are wild creatures don't belong to you won't work as presumption features in a damages law suite !

How often has he been stung over the years? If its a couple of times in a decade its not significant enough to move the hives. If yearly he's getting stung i am surprised he has been so patient! 9 Hives in a garden :sos:

We both have large gardens so I think 9 hives is not unreasonable. They are about 25 yards from his back door. At the moment I have 4 main colonies and 3 smaller ones made up from the main ones.

It is almost impossible for a neighbour to sue a bee keeper. The council will not be interested and anyway how can he prove they were my bees that put his wife in hospital?

Other countries have laws protecting neighbours from bee keepers but in Britain it's still an uncontrolled free for all and long may it continue that way.

Just a thought on the original post. A hair clip style queen cage/catcher used when collecting the swarm increases the chance of the swarm staying put. Downside is you have to find HM

Beekill, I recommend you have a chat with a solicitor ASAP! The local Council, residents association, your neighbour, neighbourhood watch will all develop a deep interest in your bees affairs. English law is based in reasonable assumption, and it's reasonable for your neighbour and a judge to assume that your bees are causing the problems. They have asked you to move them (reasonable). You are risking a costly lawsuit. I suggest you get a professional opinion and start saving your pennies!

That hedge may be the problem

My neighbour has been moaning for years about being stung by my bees and not being able to use his garden. I have 9 hives lined up against his 8ft hedge a few feet from his garden path.

I have seen people get away with hedges as bee barriers but I am not totally convinced.

I have a suspicion that new foragers can get lost on their orientation flights - and in this case could end up in a panic on the wrong side of the hedge. And upset bees tend to be aggressive!

You say you have a large garden. Why not move the bees as far away from your neighbour as possible? That way, if it does turn litigeous, you can at least show that you have tried.

If Beekill's post is for real, his neighbour may well have the making of a successful nuisance claim. But unless he has legal expenses insurance it would be a very expensive gamble to pursue it, and very few solicitors would take such a claim on a conditional fee basis.

Beekill seems to be the sort of beekeeper who gets the rest of us a bad name. A very selfish person indeed.
