HI, I`m making a horizontal hive and was going to visit my local sawmill . traditionally cedar would be the choice .

Does anyone have experience with other types of rough sawn timber ,longeviety being the main issue. perhaps redwood or larch ?

Larch works well enough. After five years of use I have not seen anything adverse on my homemade hives. Gave them an initial linseed oiling after they had stood a year outside, once dry put them into use. No need to oil it really, it goes grey nicey enough.

I made topbar hives from pallets. Lasted 10 years so far.
