Bee photos!

Hi, I've just joined, not because I'm a bee keeper, but to get some info on bees I've caught on camera! I had a week in Sardinia in May and in one area on the south west coast I came across a patch of land by the coast road buzzing with bees. When I looked closer, they were all landing on the dry soil and appeared to be eating the soil. I wondered if it was salt in the soil that attracted them. It was only in this one spot that is saw this behaviour. Any ideas? Photo attached.
