I was up the back of the garden (a good way from the hives) when a bee landed in my hair. I know the usual outcome of a bee entangled in hair. I tried repeatedly to get rid of it with a grab (crush) and lift action with my right hand but to no avail. I ducked under the cypress tree and pushed my head up into the foliage and finally the noise stopped and the bee was gone. I looked down at my hand and was amazed that I hadn't been stung on the hand as the glove I had been wearing had a hole over the pad of my thumb.

I went inside and something drew me to the nape of my neck. A lump under the skin. I turned to the mirror and squeezed gently. Out from under my skin emerged a bee, fully formed, just as if was emerging from a capped cell but coming out more like a bot fly larva. I could also see the sting, also fully under the skin but separated from the bee.

I woke up. It was the middle of the night.

Just as well it wasn’t varroa

For some reason I am reminded of Donna Noble and the Time Beetle from Dr Who!
