Price of camera is irrelevent and if you look at these photos http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11083&highlight=drinking you can get stunning shots with £150 camera, often you just need to have the camera.

For sure right time right place can make a shot.
The pic posted by jdee had sharpness on a different level to what you can achieve with a £150 camera/lens, sorry but technology doesn't come cheap.
Would like to see more jdee, I remember some by macrojunkie who posts on flickr that were exceptional and a similar type of photo to what you posted. Hoping to have a go before the season begins here, or do I mean season ends..:-(

If the macrojunkie you refer to is Scott Thompson then your man is in a different league to me altogether his stuff is exquisite. I have only recently brought the macro lens and it does offer up a whole new world of photography - one which I hope if it stops raining in Ireland for long enough to get into a lot more.

Yes that's him, if I remember he uses a 65mm macro and a macro twin lite. Macro is fairly addictive once you start!
