Despite raising the BBKA subscription by £2 from October 2013, the BBKA now want to raise Subscriptions again by £1 from October 2014

Proposition to Annual Delelgates Meeting of the BBKA just recive today, that is a 20% increase in two years, dont know about your wages but mine went down rather than up 20%

"1/2014 BBKA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
That, in view of the budget and projections presented annual capitation rates per member to be increased with effect from 1 October 2014 (payable in April and September 2015) as follows:
Registered members from £17.00 to £18.00
Other categories of member, pro rata:
Partner members from £11.20 to £11.90
Country members from £8.50 to £9.50
Junior members from £8.50 to £9.50
Individual members £37.00 to £38.00

It ain't going to break the bank
Come on I'll bet you waste more than that a week?
I know I do .
There are thousands of pounds worth of unused gizmos lying around the average household .
Let's keep a sense of proportion ! :D

well I supose I could shop at Tescos instead of Harrods but I have got to get the first increase passed my Members, then ask for more for next year ,thats the painful bit, ~ Beekeepers at tight B****d ain't they

We actually reduced our capitation take last year to help members out and over 75s just pay BBKA subscription plus £1= £16 last year, £18 this year, £19 next year#

Quite apart from anything else, someone is being wildly inaccurate in claiming that the various rises are "pro rata".
"By arbitrary amounts" would seem to be more accurate.

Any idea when that will be on the website?

The 2013 ADM papers are the only ones visible. Perhaps time to consider expenditure. I see the largest item in 2012 was the newsletter at a net cost of 120,000, I suspect that postage charges have increased that substantially in the last year. I, for one, don't need a paper magazine through my letterbox every month. PDF or 6 issues a year is quite enough.

Any business needs to keep an eye on the general trends. Many of us suspect the recent boom in beekeeper numbers is reaching a plateau. A good proportion of those were added to the BBKA membership. There's a danger of a spiral developing; increased charges leading to falling membership numbers, leading to increased charges and so it continues.

when the flash in the pans of any organisation vanish it is always the loyal members who get caned.

Items are coming out in small batches, noticed that what i received today from the County Secretary was the BBKA budget, (see pdf)

That budget assumes a further rise in membership subscriptions to £19 from 2015

Now that's taking the Michael,

Thanks for that, it's very interesting. Quick perusal, I'd say the questionable figures are mostly on the income side:

  • That the membership capitation is completely price inelastic. The projections show membership increasing in 2014 and at 2013 levels in 2015 and 2016. If fees are increasing, I could see individuals and associations walking away.
  • Corporate and institutional membership income more than tripling to 40k plus without at least some controversial sponsors
  • That "adopt a beehive" and "friends of the bees" income rises from 8k to 65k in a year

I just don't see that as realistic budgeting.

Maybe if more Assoc at roots level bulk bought to sell at a discount at meetings then members would cope with a hike in fees. Balance their books a bit. Increase attendances too.

£1 increase.... how much is a packet of ****? £1 wont even buy me 2 Crunchie bars, dammit!

:iagree: Heather but we're dealing with bee keepers, not your normal rational. £1 in its self is nothing.

Our membership fee is £30pa with a £3 disc, was £5, if they (re)join before 31.12. and full amount thereafter. Waiting to see how many members we loose this year. £19 to £20 of that fee goes to "outside" bodies: BBKA + BDI.

Our BKA has the added complication that at our AGM we were discussing the merits of both the BBKA & WBKA (another thread).
We have around 200 members, 39 signed in at the AGM and probably a 1/3rd of those were committee members and guests.
Although several members were pro BBKA, pricing was an issue for some, as one Welsh BKA offers full membership for £13.
For some I think this might be a straw too far for some camels.

Interesting numbers.
Curious that the total cost of all member benefits (BBKA News, Insurance, etc) should be out-weighed by the overheads, staff and expenses.

I note that BBKA Enterprises seems not to make ANY contribution to the BBKA funding.

Have you seen the accounts and ADM agenda?
Some interesting figures in there if you have time to plough through.

Our branch only puts £1 on whatever the BBKA charge so it's not an issue. What do other branches do with all their extra money if as suggested some charge £10 on top? Do you get value for money, whatever that money may be, is the question?

I consider we get loads for our money and I like a paper copy of BBKA news. It's good for passing to new members, using at shows & events etc.

It's still cheaper than Beecraft or any of the other journals.

we charge a £9 capitation plus £1 county and for that we run five apairies for our urban members plus the cost of running a club house

so our fees have been £28 (when in Herts as higher county capitation),dropped to £25 ( on transfer to Middx), £27 2014, £28 2015 and now £29 2016 ,all the changes have been out of our control
