even if the adding each sides method doesn't produce an exactly accurate weight, (the mathematics prove that it will be pretty close - it's all based on levers and moments of force, differing angles of the vectors can produce some variation), but for our purposes any error doesn't matter as the errors will be both small and a reasonably consistent factor.

What the beekeeper is interested in is "Is the hive gaining or losing weight?", so if the same method is used each time and the figures recorded, you'll get the correct trend, even if the figures are imprecise.
It`s the most relevant comment so far, :iagree: Thus, the matter of concern is: whether was the same method used each time?

No he didn't - he's not that switched on - the second time he used a different hive with a new colony and measured each bee individually with a teaspoon

:D . So far up to now the weight gain could be.

(A) i have a colony of mice living in there that can squeeze through a 8mm be space.

(B) My fully water proofed Kingspan insulated hive is water logged .

(C) and now i can't weigh it properly.. .

You honestly could not make this ***** up..:smilielol5:

maybe it's just your bees putting on weight because the can't get out and exercise.
You've got yourself a hive full of benefit scrounging couch potatoes headed by an overweight promiscuous single mother with hordes of offspring by different fathers - if you're not careful you'll end up on the Jeremy Kyle show!!

When i next visit the hive i will open it up and stick a wind tunnel in there for them to fly up and down, on the weight gain subject i did stick a pallet full concrete breeze blocks on top to stop the cosy blowing of last week, i wonder if that could have anything to do with it..

I heft my hives to no how much stores they have, once you lose one or two to low stores you soon no how heavy a wintering beehive should be, never weighed a hive in 30 odd year

I'm a bit OCD ( I count things......)
I HAVE to weigh mine.
Also I'm a bit arthritic........on bad days a light hive would be heavy and on good days a heavy one light.

I'm slightly autistic when it comes to keeping thing in order and for that reason that is why i weigh with scales, i know i'm new to bee keeping but i would not settle guesstimating weights, i'm not arthritic but i do have some joint issues now and again and like yourself one day something that weighed 20lbs could feel like 40lbs other days and vise versa

Thanks Millet just read that one as well!!!!
Another question!!! would it not be better to weigh with the roof on so as to prevent heat loss in the winter from removing the roof every week just to check the weight?
My hive does not have a roof on during winter Chris, it has this Kingspan insulation on top so the roof is not needed. ;) ... this i a dummy hive by the way that i used for measurements, the stand my active hive is on is a lot better.

Snowdrop, winter cherry, winter honeysuckle, winter aconite, primrose...

Seems like a large increase though.

After a week of mild weather, there are dandelions flowering along all the road verges here. Never seen them so early before. The hazel catkins are out early too, and I spotted a damson in the hedgerow white with blossom.

Ok then. Now it`s your turn to explain to Millet why your simple mechanics do not work for him well ;)

He misweighed.
His addition is rubbish
His subtraction is rubbish.
He wrote down the wrong numbers.
He used the incorrect hive weights.
He cannot read his own writing.
He was drunk or incapable .
He weighed things this time he excluded before...

All are feasible explanations.. As he admits he is slightly autistic, it is possible it could be a combination.

Or his hives found a 45 gallon drum of honey which was opened...

Or he fed them and forgot or someone else did.

Edit: no offence intended..

No offense taken by me but all of the above could be true, ;)

Doesn't matter either or (as far as weighing is concerned) as long as you do the same each time.
