I have just had a call from a bee inspector. He wants to come and inspect my hives. Is this normal? Is it compulsory?
I am not a member of an association so I don't know where he has my number from. His name checks out with the inspectors on Bee Base. I don't think I have anything to hide but it has made me quite nervous.

Yes. It is quite normal. Don't worry, I had inspections every year before I did the DASH certification. The bee inspector isn't there to trip you out or test you on anything. They have a statutory duty to control foulbrood but, that aside, I find them extremely sensible and helpful.

Now you're in for it ! ..........not at all, they are there to assist you, and point you in the right direction, there might be foul brood in your area and then it is mandatory for all hives to be inspected.

Mine were inspected for the first time earlier this year, mainly because my hives are located near a channel port and I was given lots of useful advice about how to check for Small Hive Beetle. I found the inspection really helpful and not intimidating at all. (My bees were praised for their state of health too...felt like a proud mummy!!)

Are you not registered on BeeBase?

No, I am not registered on bee base. Not to my knowledge anyway. I am a member of the BBKA so maybe that's where they have my details from.

If they try telling you to give them some top ventilation with an OMF put your fingers in your ears
