I did an AS ( Snelgrove 11/modified) on 13 May. I waited 7 days, went back to find the clipped Q and she had gone. I left the biggest Q cell. In the split I pulled a big Q on 30 May. Checked the other box and Q cell was empty. There then followed 3 weeks of cold, wet & windy weather and I now find I have drone brood in both boxes. I have looked for Qs several times in both boxes but not seen. Egg patterns and random spread of drone brood suggest laying workers.
I have a strong 6 frame nuc arriving later today from an experienced member of Stockport BKs. I will transfer the bees to brood box tonight with 2 drawn frames and 2 foundation.
I believe my bees to be healthy with negligible mite drop. However, I am aware of the drone/mite connection. So, should I shake out the drone laying colony and leave them to blag their way into the new colony. If this is too risky what can I do with this colony? The bees are working very hard and so far I have not found drone brood in the nearly full super.
