Make a cosy to cover the whole thing....Time n effort probably works out dearer than a double Payne's nuc though

If i made a cosy to cover the whole thing as it stands i dare say it could become expensive and hard to take apart, just imagine the awkward cuts underneath the roof to get it all tight and close fitting with the rest of it, the roof would have to be built into the cosy for it to work.

On time and effort that is free and enjoyed by me when making things.

The roofs will start delaminating from the bottom as water seems to linger there before dripping away so do like swarm said or you could use a oil base paint to soak into the edges. Rounding the edges will help also

back to your Nuc's is that a national brood box cut in half to make your two Nucs. ? .

Each brood box is cut so that each nuc when made up is 230mm wide- 2 together then occupy the same footprint as my national kit and will go on a varroa floor and under national roof. Both can be vaped together as they have their own OMF

That makes sense with the floors and side entrance as i prefare the warm way and also for uniting a separate floor will make like so much easier, food for thought, do you have a picture of your side under entrance removable floor or are they still in the making.
Thanks
Steve.

Here you are. This is the one for the Maisie's nuc.
I have put a rim round the floor so that the box locates on it without sliding off, deepened underneath so that I can vape it easily and put an ordinary but removable entrance block in to reduce the entrance if needed

I cannot understand that mesh floor in the nuc.

One guy uses 2 cm round hole and another 15 x 40 hole....

The heath of the nuc is very essential in the build up. I noticed it when I abandoned wooden nucs and I started to use poly nucs.
.
The most stupid is long hive with mesh floor.

Finman
The floor has an under hive entrance.
I like to vape my hives for varroa treatment and there is no where to insert the iron unless I have an open floor.
At least I have the option of closing it.
At least I have the option of overwintering a double decker colony.

Thank you Erica, i may copy that as it will save me on mesh as well as going the warm way.;)

Your nucs .

I have no options.

I talked about jumbo ventilation.

I was sat idle earlier so i decided to knock a 6 frame double brood Nuc up out of 19mm ply that i was given, i ran out of wood so i will do the roof when i beg a bit more :spy: , when the roof is done i will treat it with a wood preservative, you never know it might come in handy for something..

Plywood is not ideal, but can be made weathertight by painting any exposed edges with 100% waterproof glue (I use D4 from Toolstation), and raising the woodwork up off the ground by solid wooden battens or similar.

FWIW, this was my attempt at a 6-Frame Nuc Box made from plywood. In 6-Frame mode:

... and in 2x3-Frame mode:

I made 8 of these boxes and this is what they have morphed into over the years - with feeder shell over, and magnetically-attached anti-robbing screen at the front:

They've survived the weather ok - but would I make any more of them ? No. It's 5-Frame Nuc Boxes for me (and no plywood) from now on. A much more flexible size, i.e. a lot more can be done with the same sized box - and much easier to pull bees from a single box, than a divided one.

Why don't you vape via entrance,
like others do?
.

Others Vape from the front others Vape from underneath, my entrance block is modified to be a tunnel for mouse and wasp protection and is never removed so it is tightly stuck in with propolis, i have a inspection tray with a slot cut out to take the pan from the vaporizer, before i do anything the entrance is blocked with a piece of kitchen roll while the bees are still calm,by doing this causes minimal disruption to the bees and by going under the mesh floor i have no chance of cooking any bees.

As I explained. I have an underfloor entrance. I can't get the hot iron into the entrance it is underneath and has a right angle bend in it. It's in the photos. Anyway I was trying to help millet out not trying to convert anybody else

Quite right too - "stuff for free" is the best stuff in the world !

If possible, you might want to check out whether pallets can be obtained locally. Ask around industrial units etc. Pallets are often free - especially if they're broken, in the way, people keep tripping over them ...

Can be a great source of fair(ish)-quality timber.
