    Cambridge bees

I agree it made me chuckle to see on bbc news. Obviously a slow news day. Making it out to be a massive colony when thats the average for a strong successful colony.

    Bibba

Chimps 99% dna vs human Gorillas 98% dna vs human Theres a huge amount of differences in 1 or 2% So how does the 1 or 2 % difference in amm account for anything?

    Salt water in hive

One of my hives got vandalised once, lid taken off and left to rain on all day. I came home found them put the lid on fed them and surprisingly they were absolutely fine. Not salt water but? Surely there was enough forecast warning to move them.

mire drop third week, second treatment

I use a magnifying glass and my varroa have a slight sheen to them and a redbrown colour to them. The little teeny pieces of black debris are not varroa. Maybe try google imaging them to help you identify.

    Queenless hive ??

I agree there are many beeks saying there queen is off lay atm. I eould be invlined to jump on the chsnce of treating for varroa whislt you have no brood tho.

    Further treatments ???

Thanks ian i was worried on over treating them , if they could handle more than one type, and causing resistance, but i suppose if theyre weakened by varroa then its a mute point worrying about the health or tolerance of them whilst giving further treatments.

    Further treatments ???

Hi all i have three hives which are sll in the same apiary. Two seem to have very low varroa counts but one is still dropping 9 over24hrs on the 5th week of apiguard. (1st tray on for 10 days all gone follwed by 2nd tray). Should i treat them further and if so with what. Thanks for all your...

    Bees in the Garden Experiences

Hiya, i have 3 hives in my garden. I started with one last year, and boy was it a baptism of fire. They were grumpy mongrels that chased you after closing up and leaving the hive, never mind about their behaviour while inspecting. That said i quickly requeened with some of hivemakers bees which...

    ball of propolis

Our local group had someone contact them to buy it. They were offering £65 per kg.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Popped 2nd trays of apiguard in. First trays all tsken but one hive had about 20 dead bees in the tray..also topped up feeding 2:1 with hivemakers thymol recipe in it. My bees are taking it down regardless of apiguard tainting the smell of the hives.

    melting wax down

I took a big tropicana container. Chopped the top off and melt it down in there in the oven on a low heat. Then just peel it off and chop debree off. Its brill

    Hive suddenly viscous!

I agree with hivemaker. After having two of his queens my bees are calm quiet and so tolerant. I will slways requeen hives on a third strike bad behaviour policy from now on

What to expect following Apiguard treatment

I have apiguard on 3 hives. Two have wolfed down syrup one has not. I too am not sure as to why they differ. The one that hasnt is slightly stronger hive but only by one extra frame of brood. All have relatively equsl stores so im still left wondering.

Thanks ericA so much to learn. But still love this hobby.

Please can I have some advice to fix this mess?

As a newbee i cant add to these knowledgable folks but thought id point out i went to double brood this summer too quick and my queen performed poorly with similar situations as your hives 0 snd 1. I went back to single bb and she is now going like the clappers. Bias stores the works. Managing...

    emergency queens and swarms

For learning purposes only. If you leave 6 qc in a nuc how do you stop them swarming further cast swarms with each queens emergence.

    emergency queens and swarms

Thanks all, jenkins that makes total sense about bees seeing qc and it triggers their impulse. I didnt think the nuc was that full for any normal swarm due to space. It was a caught cast that had settled and requeened. Due to our negligence we lost our bought amm during inspection. Up until then...
