There was a leaflet on the BBKA about hive paints before they had a new website that discouraged from making hives from larch as the resin contents was so high that preservatives would have a problem sticking to them..... words of that effect anyway,

I have never needed to use any preservatives on the larch hives, same as i don't use them on the cedar hives. Never found larch to have very much in the way of resins, always found that to be more of a problem with pine, especially if air dried, kiln drying will set the resin at a higher temperature, making it less of a problem..

That's what the guys at the saw mill told me

Hi everyone,

I know that cedar is pretty much weatherproof and does not require treatment but I am wondering about other woods such as redwood or idigbo. Do they need weatherproofing??

Mellifera
How many people know that that Western Red Cedar Is not a cedar? It belongs to the family of Thuga, an evergreen conifer.

Red deal (ordinary pine) is o.k. but needs treating and is heavier - also these days timber quality is pretty poor
I'd go for second quality cedar at the sales - they're all on at the moment :)

No sign on t horn's online sale..........

I wonder what are those problems?

High density pine is the most valuable in Finland. For example in window frames it is demanded certain type growth that frames stand sun-rain effects.

Of course, if you saw many times twisted branches and trunks, the wood may have resin pockets inside the wood.

Larch has mad price.
