Am I right in thinking that a very dark/black none fuzzy bee with withered wings is likely to be just an old bee walking away to die?

No, bees tend to flake out in the field, whilst forgaing. Natures way of keeping dead things away from the hive. Withered wings sounds like varroa damage, and black and shiny sounds like viral problems. Bee Paralysis Virus sounds like a likely candidate. Sounds like you may need a fairly high efficacy varroa treatment ASAP.
