A farmer is allowing me to put some hives on his land this year. He told me that there is a lot of wild garlic growing near to where the hives are likely to be positioned. Does anyone know wether it will adversely affect the taste of the honey?

Where there is enough you will get a lovely flavoured honey..........the plants stink but the honey is lovely delicate stuff..............the plant is often known as Ramsons.....and usually grows in damp yet well drained valleys, usually wooded. The town name Ramsbottom is derived from that.....nothing to do with sheep.

Loads of wild garlic round one of my sites and I've never noticed a bee on it or any garlicy smell or taste.

Local name in these parts is "Stinking Lily" :)

There are large amounts of it here in Cyprus, but I too have never seen bees working the flowers. Maybe they will this year after all the rain we have had.

pull a few leaves and stalks in spring, add olive oil, few chopped nuts and seasoning, blitz to a paste and use as pesto - makes a fab pasta sauce!

no idea about the honey, but well worth picking the leaves. Can be used as a vegetable, for instance cooking chicken breasts wrapped in them, really nice!
