I am getting a new colony from someone nearby. Is it better to move them the evening you shut them in or the next morning? and why please.

either is fine, although if done in the evening you can leave shut in until morning

I'd go for evening. Have everything prepared and ready so it's just a case of siting the hive. Release them in the morning and enjoy the orientation flights.

If you shut them in last thing at night, you will contain nearly, if not all, your bees.
If you shut then in first thing, you can be sure some have already gone foraging before you got up! (Weather permitting, of course.)

Also . How nearby is nearby ?

:iagree: - remember the three mile three feet rule.
I tend to shut in last thing at night and move them first thing in the morning - last thing you want to do is stumble around in the twilight with a hive full of p!issed off bees :D
