Hi , I’m looking for some advice about whether it’s too late in the season to add another super . The hive has two supers on , one nearly full the other just a third full . There is an abundance of blackberry near the hive .

Get it on...they need room for processing nectar and parking space.

It's never too late. A good flow in autumn is not unheard of, and it is only the first month of summer. If they don't want it they just won't use it.

Thanks for your replies , I’ll keep adding supers .
I was talking to an old time beekeeper recently who told me the season used to finish on Saint Swithin’s Day which is the 15 July . Has anyone else heard this or was he pulling my chain ?

Depends where you live. Uuuup North our season ends late September but can go on.

When adding supers, do you add on top of brood box under other supers?

If the super already on is not quite full, will they finish it off before starting the new one?

Thanks

Depends....is your new super un-drawn or drawn?
If un-drawn always under any other supers for me.
Otherwise add where ever and see what the bees do. If you put it on top and they aren't filling it but filling the one below...then you can always move it later. The bees will tell you what to do...

I sometimes think that without Heather there’d be no season.

Heather is wonderful...however garden apiary, no he4ather, is still getting small flow from HB well into September/ October. Problem is knowing when to stop collecting honey and varroa treat. I wish I could say I always got it right..

Anything after returning from the moors is the bees’ own.

Feed and treat and winter.
