I am looking for something to keep my smoker in while in the car, to stop the smell. Do you keep yours in anything?

Judging by the number of horror stories one comes across, a (metal) lidded metal bucket, part filled with sand seems like a good idea ...

As long as the lid seals airtight, a plastic box could be used -- with enough sand to keep the hot metal away from the plastic).
The airtight seal would ensure that the smoker went out and was unable to blaze up (or stink out the car).
Problem is that REALLY big, airtight-sealing boxes are rare. And even more rarely, cheap.

I would think a 35l 'really useful box' would do the job, for most smokers as long as the smoker was emptied out first. Just a few cm of sand would afford the insulation needed for the bottom and the head-space would be sufficient not to melt the lid. Not needeed to be totally airtight as it would not leak so much after the initial expansion of cooler air.

I have a toolbag I got out of B&Q, works a treat.

The smell comes from the smoke spout on the lid, bung it with a cork or small lump of turf/grass will stop it smelling but would empty first, I keep an old spray bottle filled with water in my van to extinguish the smoldering remains from the smoker

Ex army ammo box works well for me, good and solid with a strong clip on the lid. £3 from a local car boot sale.

I found a mini old style metal dustbin for £8.50 in a well known Swedish flat pack furniture shop. Seems to work as long as smoker is "plugged" (usually with grass)

I used to empty mine and seal it with a cork (kept on a chain attached to the smoker) Still found the smell invading the car! SWMBO was not impressed. I acquired a large plastic tub with an air tight lid of sufficient size to take the smoker, she is now happy! Must admit the car smells better too.:)
