Just what i was thinking about queen s failing// what do we do with the splits weve done if there isnt a queen in them.. Buy one?? Or put some eggs in??

I cant find any UK bred mated queens for sale, seems only imports are available at the moment.

There most likely is a queen in each of these splits. You have given two alternatives; here is another - re-unite. Your second alternative is a makeshift effort at recovering the colony; to all intents and purposes it is a waste of time and effort with a split.

I suppose it was predictable that such an early start would lead to some disappointments. I split a massive colony at the beginning of April, as they already had Q cells that were nearly sealed. Of the two splits, one queen managed to mate OK, the other didn't, and her nuc was reunited with the original (along with a large number of drones!).

The other nuc did brilliantly and filled out a 6-frame nuc throughout May, and I was hoping to put them into a full-size brood box this weekend. But no: that queen has now stopped laying, the nuc which was nice and heavy last w/e is now alarmingly light, and I opened the lid today to give them some food and the nuc is packed with starving bees and empty cells. There's nectar about, but those bees aren't such strong fliers as my other colony, and the strong winds have put them off completely.

Meanwhile, the hived swarm is foraging well despite the wind, and filling supers with bramble honey, but I noticed no new eggs in the last three days despite seeing the (usually-prolific) queen looking perfectly OK. I guess they know best.

My plans to get a locally-bred queen have also been put on hold, as so many promising virgin queens appear to have got blown off course on mating flights and didn't return, resulting in a disappointing couple of weeks for local suppliers. The only consolation is that the year is yet young....

I did an 2 artficial swarms on 23rd April - still no eggs. I recon that this weather is to blame and I am hoping averthing will be Ok in a week or two. :angelsad2:

I think I was warning of this when all and sundry were busy doing early A/S's, splits and all sorts.

If your name is Hivemaker, or another in a similar position, you take the chance but hedge your bets with further grafts, per eg. If you only have the one colony you have messed about, it is down to the beek, I'm afraid.

I did my first rearing splits just yesterday (had to A/S another couple of colonies, but recognise that the queens may not have been mated too well). June is a far safer month to get them mated easily. I know I warned around the 14/15th April and that was not the only time. And I know my queens may not get mated well even in June.......It is the UK, after all!

Possibly best just to recombine. I know thats what I will do if my nuc with a virgin queen doesnt come good. Depending on weather and behaviour of main hive (if they prepare to swarm in June) then I'll AS and have another shot at raising a queen.

Hi, just wondered if mating nukes or artificial swarms fail to get mated queens is it necessary to find the virgins before uniting with a queenright colony via say newspaper method or is the laying queen likely to kill the virgins. After 4 weeks waiting I'm afraid my optimism is beginning to wane.Ainsie:(

I agree Rab but what do you do last week April when after 3 weeks of laying like mad swarm cells appear even when they have lots of room? All my splits were A/S with swarm cells. Today I checked the test frame I put into the oldest split 4 days ago and no queen cells, so there's a virgin in there.
Another week and it will be time to unite but will have to find that virgin first as I don't want her killing the mated queen.
Slightly better forecast for coming week so fingers crossed.

I did my earliest AS on the 9th April. Virgin queen seen running around on the 21st May and she was small. She was laying by the 30th May and was much bigger after mating. They now have three frames of brood.
