Even better would be to kill the whole colony, wash and count and dig out the brood and count, that would be very accurate and have almost the same effect on the colony as washing 300 overwintered bees from it before the 2021 draught emerge.

Yes, but a diagnosis tool that kills the patient (as weakening a colony during the month that the population is already at its weakest risks doing) might not be a great idea?

Sugar roll over alcohol, at least then the selected bees can be returned to the hive if separated from the treatment.

Thank you for info. And guidance. Will wait a while for warmer weather to arrive then do first inspection and decide on treatment necessity at that time.

Bit of a micro climate in East Riding / Holderness between the Pennines, Wolds, the Humber and N.Sea.
We do get the N. Easterlies but you are further east and suffer more from those cold East winds.
