From where did the Western honeybee (Apis mellifera) originate?
Studies come to conflicting results.
1. was the source population found in Africa or the Middle East?
2. did colonization of Europe include a western route via northwest Africa through the Iberian Peninsula? Various options have been proposed:
(a) a Middle-Eastern origin, including colonization of Europe via a western route (Ruttner et al.1978; Ruttner1988) .
(b) a Middle-Eastern origin, not including the western colonization route (Garnery et al.1992) .
(c) an African origin, including the western colonization route (Whitfield et al.2006).

Africa was open to mellifera. Africa's size is 3 fold compared to Europe.
