Did my usual thing of sitting watching the bees last night and watched this large bumble bee alight on the landing board. It then walked calmly into the hive. Wandered about on the floor for about 30- 40 seconds and then calmly left.

I would have thought it would have been attacked or chased out by a few angry bees at least. Is this normal or are my bees just too gentle to care?

Similar happened with my older/larger coloney a few weeks ago, one white bummed one going in as bold as brass totally ignored by the external bees, mind you didn't see her or her bits exit.

I found a couple of bumble bees in the bottom of my hive last year when I was cleaning the floor and generally replaceing parts.
The bumble bee was very black and burnt looking as if it had been in an oven, so I assume my bees had covered it and 'heated it to death'.

You do not get vigorous guarding activity in a land of plenty. And some strains of bee are less defensive than others, as you no doubt know.

I should watch that colony when wasps can become a problem. Do not be too late in putting in the entrance reducers come late summer.
