Mine are painted with masonry paint.
Joined together with exterior glue, No Nails or some such.
You need to fix the sides robustly so a good thing to pin them with is barbecue skewers pushed through from side to side then cut off and buried.
Seal the edges with ally tape.
You need a clearance of about half an inch each side.
Make them deep enough to reach down to the entrance with a 50mm layer on top of the crown board
(Take the roof off)
I don't have wood peckers so can't advise.
