16th August just got back from what I hope is my last call-out of year to collect a swarm, the chap open is compost bin to throw in some carrots and a huge cloud of bees came out they all landed on the path where i spent most of the afternoon smoking them up into my Skep? collect tomorrow evening i hope? photos up Friday.not worthy

why use smoke............. a trail of Vimto usually does the trick... especially if the queen has been ensconced in a queen catcher in the catch box ( I never use a skep these days too difficult to close up !)

in scotland does IRN BRU work?
maybe ITLD can tell us? :)

:eek:Robbie .. I hope you are not bringing a bunch of tatty mongrells onto the AMM reserve of RAME !

A test for Buckkies would be to see if they drink the foul monk's brew !!! ???

Just some advice on skeps, I always use a skep, once the bees are in from a tree or whatever, I put it onto a sheet, so cloth/skep sometime I put a bit of wood or something to lift the edge to allow more open area for the bees to enter. To close up I wrap the sheet up and around the skep and then put a bungie? cord around it enclosing all the bees in. Hope this helps others that use skeps.
regards
Steven

Hi Steven I have a net curtian lay on floor a doul of wood I carry skep the bees then in the evening I lift the net up around and tape up perfect. Drop it in the back of my truck and off we go.

Same thing, with a skep you have plenty of bee tight holes so are difficult to over heat. I use an old sheet. Cheers Steven

I've done my swarms with a skep and a sheet. Works well.

Yep skep and sheet - straw texture gives bees something to cling on to during journey home.
