There may be a mechanism for ensuring that drones from the parent colony doesn’t mate with that colonies virgins ?
We have still have lots to learn .
I have one short frame per colony for sacrificial drones . My apiary contains a healthy population of drones .

Sounds like you're selecting for 'smart' Varroa that only choose the big frame :biggrinjester:

Exactly ! Varroa go for drone brood as a preference after which it’s any port in a storm .
