hi beeks,
any good advice on making up syrup for feeding. is it simply melt 4kg of sugar in water on the stove? how much water? how long on the heat?
thanks

You'll need a big pan to do 4kg in.

For 4kg you need 2L of water approx.

I get the water quite hot, 60-70c and then gradually stir in sugar.

Will make a nice sticky mess on your stove; I now use a tea urn in the middle of the lawn!

PS: It's quite early to start winter feeding, they can still bring in plenty of stores. I won't be feeding for another month probably.

4 ks sugar. 2.5 liters of water. Pour boiling water into the sugar and stir until fully disolved. Generally takes approx 5 minutes of stirring. The liquid will be clear when finished. No mystery to it. That makes a winter feed with the correct sugar content of 61.7%. I do 2 kgs to 1.25 liters of water and I pour it into a cleaned 2 liter milk container for cooling and storage. Also very easy to pour into feeders.

Same hear only on the patio, Not the lawn. Incidentally, and not the reason, but sugar indirectly suppresses grass as it increases the population of competing organisms

Where's Mary Poppins when you need her........

thanks for replies, all sounds good.
