If you had left them a few more weeks you should have got a charged QC then done the split.

Last year I started with two colonies and ended the season with eight (Splits, and collecting swarms). It was quite a shock to the system and hard work trying to keep up with all the equipment requirements. I found it a big jump and in retrospect would have preferred two to four then perhaps eight, but over two seasons rather than one.

Good luck with the split. If it look like not going to plan it may be best to combine. I have has QC in August so there is no rush.

All good sound advice from all of you guys. I will wait till the weather stabilises abit then see how things go. Probably make a nuc and buy and good queen and hope I catch a few swarms too. I have 5 empty hives and one colony which is better than my start last year because I did have more hives than bees ,LOL. Thanks again to you all for your replies.

You are keen to get to several hives but I would recommend you finish this year with two strong hives.

yes, that is more realistic , considering I lost one last winter (April) they fell at the last hurdle but it was my fault.
