Was very popular in its day as a 'gentlemans' hive as an alternative to moveable frames hives and was a form of top bar hive rather like the current Warre. However this was at a time when cut comb was popular and before extracted honey became fashionable.
Fell out of fashion once cheaper hives built around cheese boxes or fruit boxes such as the Cowan Hive became available.
