As first hive appears to be doing quite well and full of bees/stores is it too late in the year to ne considering doing a split?

No you could do one of two things split brood that is if your on double brood or make up an nuc with the old queen and let the hive make queen cells and requeen.
are you in south staffordshire beekeeping association???

Not too late in my view, but you should make sure that you have plenty of bees, stores and brood - lessens the risk if you can make a strong split.
