Just take the roof off and put your hand on the crownboard. Even when it is cold enough for the bees to be in tight cluster, it still feels warm. Without insulation above the CB that is energy being lost from the colony, which must add stress to them. The less stress the better my bees, I believe. Each to his own.
 
With Warre, I have a coussin (quilt) on top.
Its absorbing the humidity of the hive and insulating the hive.

I put monthly fresh wood shavings and straw and remove the slightly humid one.
Doesnt disturb the bees neither does it cool them down.

Works so far.
